If you are wondering if people with ostomies have to stroll around town completely naked, then I am here to tell you that this is simply not true. People with ostomies can actually wear all different types of clothes very easily! All too often, I hear of people getting ostomies and throwing out all their old clothes because they feel like they won’t be able to fit into them anymore (due to the ostomy pouch). Well, if that sounds like something you might end up doing after you have your ostomy, then I am here to steer you in a better direction.
In fact, I want to address the problem of people not knowing what to wear when it comes to dealing with an ostomy pouch. Many people are self-conscious about what they are wearing and if it is revealing their ostomy pouch to others. Well, I have come to the conclusion that most people do not care much about your ostomy pouch, even if they do happen to notice. At the most, they might stare because they are a little curious as to what the heck you are wearing on your body. However, most people are not rude about it and a lot of people do not care at all. Though, it is true that I was pretty self-conscious about wearing my ostomy pouch in public. That’s why I, like many other ostomates before me, try their best to hide their ostomy pouch within their clothes whenever possible. Well I am here to talk about how to best hide your ostomy pouch underneath your clothing and still look very fashionable!
First, I would like to start off by talking about how useful one-piece ostomy pouches are. If you are not sure what a one-piece ostomy pouch systems are, they are ostomy pouches that come with the skin barrier and the ostomy bag connected to each other at all times. This makes for a lower profile ostomy pouch and is much easier to hide than other ostomy pouch systems. These are great for wearing to social events or gatherings where you want to more easily hide your ostomy pouch underneath your clothes!
However, these pouches are a bit harder to change because you have to remove the entire skin barrier in order to get the pouch off (since they are connected), so that is something to keep in mind. In addition to these nice ostomy pouches that are just one piece, you can also buy certain products that are made for just the thing you are looking for. There are various ostomy belts and wraps that are made to hold the ostomy pouch close to your body and make it look flatter and slimmer against yourself. This can be really helpful if you are trying to dress in a way that hides your ostomy pouch from any prying eyes.
It is also worth mentioning that wearing tight clothing underneath is very useful in hiding your ostomy pouch. By wearing something like tight spandex, compression shorts, or leggings, you can actually keep the ostomy pouch really close to your body. If you go even further and pair this with a loose fitting pair of pants or something like that, you can actually go about your day all dressed up and most people will not even know that you happen to be wearing an ostomy pouch.
